Zombieland is a 2009 American zombie comedy film written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, directed by Ruben Fleischer, and starring Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin. The film follows a trio of people who take an extended road trip through the zombie apocalypse to find a safe haven in Los Angeles. Rhett Reese said that he wrote the film as "a response to our times" with man-against-the-world themes but also wanted to avoid too many connections with reality TV shows. He said: "The humor comes from the characters’ need to do what they have to do without any consideration for their own selves or mortality. They’re trying to survive the zombie apocalypse and not think about the fact that there is no tomorrow." "Zombieland" was filmed in and around Cleveland in September 2008 and in California in November 2008. It premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and was theatrically released on October 2, 2009 in the United States by Columbia Pictures. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and audiences, with praise going toward the strength of its unique premise, originality, humor, acting performances (particularly that of Harrelson), action scenes, visual style, soundtrack, fast pace, suspense elements—and many comparisons to "Shaun of the Dead" (2004). The film was commercially successful, grossing $102 million in the United States and Canada, the majority of which came from its international release, and $71 million in DVD sales. A zombie comedy sequel titled "Zombieland 2" has been confirmed for an October 2019 release. Two months after a zombie outbreak has decimated the American population, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) boards a plane to Fort Lauderdale, only to discover that the zombified pilot (Mike White) deliberately crashes it on an island outside Tallahassee, Florida. He meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone), and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) at the crash site, where they encounter several survivors, including Senor L.A. (Salma Hayek) and Cayman (Bill Paxton). The group travels to Tallahassee’s house, where Columbus discovers that Wichita has infected herself with the virus. The group then finds an abandoned campground and sets up there for the night. During the night, Wichita calls Tallahassee for help for she is having second thoughts about joining their journey after becoming infected; however, he convinces her to join them anyway. The next day, they make a reluctant alliance with Senor, who was the campground's lounge singer before the zombie outbreak, and kill all of the zombies there. Later that night, they stumble upon a church and barter for food and supplies with its priest/gun nut, Father Citadel (Eugene Clark). That night aboard Citadel's RV, Columbus reveals he has found a large survival guide on the Internet. That night, Wichita takes him to meet her former neighbor Misty (Mary Birdsong) and her family at their home. Afterwards, she tries to seduce him but hesitates out of fear.
